Mamelodi Sundowns central defender Siyanda Xulu has finally joined Russian side Rostov after the team finally signed the transfer agreement – just in time to beat the Russian transfer window.
Speculation was rife that Sundowns were holding up the deal – in spite of a statement on the website outlining the efforts Sundowns were making to ensure the deal goes through, and the Russians changing the goalposts each time they had to sign the contracts.
“The reports yesterday were clearly a case of the journalist not allowing the facts to get into the way of what he thought was a good story. Xulu knew what was happening, and his agent knew what was happening, so to blame Sundowns was disingenuous,” said Sundowns spokesperson Kabelo Mosito.
The Russians began the Fifa process of getting the player’s international clearance certificate, while Sundowns released the player and forwarded all the necessary documentation to the South African Football Association (Safa).
The move brings to an end months of uncertainty over the future of the young player.
He is due to leave for Russia on Thursday.
